You’re decided to work with someone local, great choice! There are lots of good reasons why you should hire a local designer. Now it’s time to choose someone. Here are a few tips for finding the right graphic designer for you in Victoria.
Choose a designer you feel will be on your team
When working with a freelance graphic designer, or even a design agency, you want to feel like their goal is to help you succeed, not just to get through the project and get paid. You want a graphic designer who will listen to your goals and make suggestions on how to use graphic design to best achieve those goals.
Choose a designer whose portfolio feels like your style
Graphic design is subjective. A talented designer can work to any style, but ultimately you are more likely to get results you like if you see styles you like in their graphic design portfolio.
Choose a graphic designer who thinks strategically
In my experience, practitioners fall into two categories: those that will take your instructions and do as you ask without questions, and those that will stop to think about why you are asking for those things. While the former has its place, I have always found that projects with people who stop to consider “why?” go more smoothly. A project with a strategic thinker can often exceed expectations and even save you money because they can come back with alternate suggestions and will think about what might come next and design towards end goals beyond the end of the immediate project.
Meet with more than one graphic designer
Ideally, you want to find a graphic designer you can connect with, so reaching out to two or three people will give you an opportunity to compare personalities and working styles as well as quotes. That’s why I offer a free consultation for potential clients to get a feel for me and how I work without any pressure to commit.
