Starting or growing a new business can be financially draining. As a graphic designer, I obviously believe wholeheartedly that money spent on an experienced graphic designer is a worthwhile investment that will help your business thrive. I also know that you need to manage your expenses. Here are a few tips to help you save a little money.
Talk to your graphic designer in advance about your needs
An ethical designer will be open to a conversation about the realities of your budget. They can make suggestions of the ways to be the most efficient getting through your project and what, if anything, you can consider dropping. They can also let you know how to work most efficiently with them to make sure your specific project goes smoothly and efficiently.
Discuss printing and material options
For print materials, where and how you get them printed can lead to savings. Though, admittedly, usually with some tradeoffs. The end cost can also be affected by the types of paper stock and finishing you choose. Your graphic designer can talk you through your options and the costs associated with them.
Be well organized in advance
Time spent on revisions can add up. Have all your content chosen, organized, and proofread before you send it to the designer to cut down on revisions. Changing the content of a piece once the design has been done means time the graphic designer needs to spend getting the design to balance again. Even small changes can add up quickly.
Consider your your minimum viable product
On bigger projects, it can be worth taking the time to set two scopes for your project. First set the scope for the ideal product (what you would end up with in a perfect world). Next, set a cope for the minimum viable product (a version that strips away everything you want but don’t necessarily need). Ask the designer to quote for both then decide where in the middle you can land to balance your vision with your budget.
